Waikato Society of Arts Celebrates their 80th Year

Waikato Society of Arts in their 80th year are still a vital part of the visual arts sector
The Waikato Society of Arts was officially established at a public meeting on August 14,
1934 and was incorporated on October 29th the same year. The convenors of the meeting were two Hamilton artists, Miss Ida Carey and Mrs Adeline Younghusband. They both spoke of the need for such a Society to provide the means to developing the skills of artists, inspire those who were yet to discover their talent, and to bring art to the attention of the general public in the Waikato. Their hopes have manifested as the WSA concludes its 80th year.

WSA is 80!

Between 1934 and 2014 there have been many who have contributed to the WSA on a mostly volunteer basis and the WSA can be proud of their achievements. Throughout the years, the WSA has been innovative in creating much from nothing, including galleries, local and national exhibitions and a very good art school. Many an artist has launched their career whilst being part of the WSA as student, member or tutor.

Members and students today are diverse in their cultures, ethnicity and ages but all have one thing in common; the visual arts are an important and vital part of the WSA society. With this in mind, the annual Member’s exhibition held at ArtsPost Gallery reflects this aspiration as WSA continues in to the future.

Gordon Harris, long time supporter of Waikato Society of Arts have generously sponsored the People’s Choice Award which will be presented at the end of the exhibition. The viewing public can participate by casting a vote for their favourite artwork, and the winning artist will receive $200 vouchers to be spent at Gordon Harris, the Art & Graphic Store in Hamilton.

Be part of the celebrations by joining everyone at the opening preview Thursday 23rd October 5.30pm at ArtsPost Gallery, 120 Victoria Street, Hamilton. Exhibition runs until 24th November 2014. – See more at: http://creativewaikato.co.nz/news/headline/293/waikato-society-of-arts-celebrates-their-80th-year#sthash.WjjkaX3y.dpuf
